At the beginning of my 5-week block at St. Francis of Assisi I was fortunate to go on camp with all the grade 5 classes to Camp Rumbug. Camp Rumbug is a school campsite located in Foster. This was an amazing experience. It gave me the chance to continue to develop my relationships with students and teachers. It also was great to see a different side of teachers and students outside the classroom setting. I attended numerous meetings, which explained to process of how the camp would be run and the different needs of students teachers need to consider when organising camps.
Although the weather was less than perfect students’ actively engaged in all activities and met the wet and muddy activities with great enthusiasm. I also participated in the wet and muddy activities along with the students, which they enjoyed. Some of the activities included the Giant Swing, Initiatives course, Abseiling, Low Ropes course, the Mud Run, Jail Break, Crazy Wombat games, Canoeing and even have the opportunity to participate in the night walk where students roasted marshmallows and sung outback songs.
Personally I was able to gain an insight on how camps are organised and how they can benefit everyone not just students. I was able to further develop relationships with teachers that assisted me for the rest of my 5-week block, relationships with students where a strong trust was formed and relationships with other members of staff such as integration aids, the principle and vice principle.
Camp also gave me the opportunity to see improvement in students’ interpersonal skills. Students who would be very shy and not participate in class discussions were becoming more assertive and getting more involved with classroom discussions. If I ever had the opportunity to go on school camp in the future I would defiantly jump at the opportunity as it has so many positives for relationship building.
