Educational Setting
I completed my final year of placement at St. Francis of Assisi Primary School. The school is located in the Northern Suburbs area of Mill Park and is in a medium socio economical area. It is a primary catholic school with a year range from Prep to Grade Six. It is a large school with 886 total enrolments. Each class has 25 to 27 students and with a number of different nationalities. As educators in a Catholic school, the school aims to promote living and learning in faith. St. Francis of Assisi Primary School is part of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish and aim to support the parents in nurturing students so that they can live their lives to their full potential. They aim to provide a learning environment, which is stimulating, positive and purposeful.
The school provides all the up to date technologies with all teachers and students in grade 5 and grade 6 are provided with a laptops and every classroom having an interactive whiteboard. The library provides students the opportunity to learn how to use apple product range with iPods, iPads and Apple Mac computer all available for students to use. St. Francis of Assisi provides students and teachers with the use of it full range of physical education equipment. The school has 1 indoor play area, 2 outdoor basketball courts, an artificial soccer ground and a football oval.
St Francis' curriculum is based on The Victorian Essential Learning Standards, which describe what is essential for students to achieve from Years Prep to 10 in Victorian schools. They provide a whole school curriculum planning framework that sets out learning standards for schools to use to plan their teaching and learning programs, including assessment and reporting of student achievement and progress. The school has a strong focus on literacy with the first 2 hours of every spent on develop literacy skills for grade prep to 2. The students participate in 2 hours a week of physical education as well as Italian, Music, Art and Library. Students who have learning difficulties and need extra assistance in the classroom are provided with integration aids, reading recovery and mathematics intervention.
