Personal Educational Philosophy
I believe that every student is a unique person who needs a safe, caring, fun and challenging environment in which to develop intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my objective and passion as an educator to assist students to meet their full potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, trustworthy, supportive, and encourages sharing of different ideas. There are three key elements I believe to be instrumental in establishing this environment, 1. The teacher sets an example and acts as a mentor and guide, 2. Allow students curiosity to enhance their learning and 3. Promoting respect and understanding for all people.
As a teacher my role is to be a mentor and guide students in their learning while providing access to information and not act as the primary source of information. Students' search for knowledge is achieved as they learn to find answers to their questions. A teacher must give every opportunity for students to develop and enhance their knowledge, an opportunity to discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing students with fun, interesting, challenging, hands-on activities and allowing sufficient time and space to use materials that emphasise the lesson being studied creates an opportunity for individual discovery and construction of knowledge to occur.
As a teacher I believe that students must be provided the opportunity to study and learn meaningful topics, which are relevant to their life and interests. By developing a curriculum around student interests it creates a fundamental motivation that will stimulate the passion to learn while keeping students interest and engaged. This can be achieved by inviting student feedback about the lessons and units of study. When students are given the opportunity for input they generate ideas and set goals, which make for more interesting activities. When students have ownership and an understanding of the curriculum, it will encourage and motivate them to work harder and perfect the skills necessary to reach their learning goals.
My classroom will be a place where students develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environment through sharing of ideas and a sensible approach to discipline. In my classroom students’ voices will be heard and an atmosphere will be created where students are free to express themselves. Conducting class meetings is one way to promote and encourage such expression. Students will be made to feel safe and understand what is expected of them. This will assist students to develop a greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the lessons being presented. In my setting fair and consistent rules will be in place stating the importance and valve of every activity. Students are shown respect for their presence and time, which in turn will lead them to learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment.
For myself, teaching provides an opportunity to continually learn and grow. As an educator I hope I am able to impart in students the love of learning, as I share my own passion for learning with them. I feel, as an educator, there is a need for sympathetic, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited to work with children and who gain a satisfaction and achievement when seeing a child improve in all aspects of their learning. In our society today it is important for students to receive a solid education and work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individual needs. I am this type of person and will always endeavor to be the best educator that I can be.
